Sublingual Suboxone Administration means that Suboxone tablets are administered under the tongue and not swallowed. The reason for this type of administration is to avoid the stomach enzymes that have the propensity to destroy the majority of Suboxone before it reaches the small intestine. The small intestine is where most oral administered medications enter the blood stream and usually within the duodenum part of the small intestine.
Suboxone has two active ingredients; Buprenorphine HCl (not bioavailable) and Naloxone (bioavailable). Bioavailable means that a medication can be taken orally and swallowed with beneficial results and contrarily not bioavailable means that the medicine will be rendered useless if swallowed. It is the Buprenorphine in Suboxone that will be destroyed by stomach enzymes and if swallowed the Suboxone medication if swallowed will ne rendered useless.
Caution should be observed after Suboxone dissolves under the tongue for at least thirty additional minutes so as not to wash down any medication that is still entering the cells on the tongue, gums, cheeks and roof of the mouth. Many physicians advise against drinking, eating or smoking for 30 minutes post Suboxone administration. |
