DRUG REHAB AND SENIORS

Why are seniors checking into rehab?

Nobody wants to be an alcoholic or a drug addict.

And nobody wants to admit they have this type of problem.

The current state of our economy is degrading more than financial institutions. It is also wreaking havoc on millions of American families.

Havoc can mean many things to many people but this article refers to the new paradigm of the typical American drug addict. “Typically they're 35 to 55 years old and addicted to at least one prescription medication and abusing several others.”

Most of the drug abuse calls that we receive concern a loved one who's addicted to either opiates or benzodiazepines or both.

Most of the calls come from a parent, spouse or sibling who can no longer standby and watch their loved-one slowly die before their very eyes. Typically their loved-one abuses more than one prescription medication. To be more specific - most of the addiction problems that we hear about are Oxycodone addiction and Xanax addiction. The paradigm statement referred to in this article is based upon empirical data.

Substance abuse is on the rise in every sector of American society, but the average age of today’s drug user who checks into rehab is increasing at an alarming rate.

It used to be that drug addicts would normally stop using drugs or die before they reached the age of 50 or 60. Today, with improved medical treatments and people becoming drug addicts at an older age, drug rehab centers are seeing more drug addicts over the age of 50 than ever before.

Many people in the senior community are self-medicating with drugs to manage the stress of physical pain, the pain itself, job loss, home foreclosure and inability to help their children.

Suicides are up for people over 80 years of age. We here of seniors giving their weapons away, weapons they’ve had since WWII, for fear they may shoot themselves in the middle of the night.

Regardless of how the economy is affecting society, more people are abusing drugs and alcohol than ever before and many of these drug abusers are approaching or in their social security years.

A revamping of drug rehabilitation treatment methods is currently underway to effectively treat seniors who find themselves addicted to drugs.

No longer is it just daddy and mommy visiting their child in rehab.

Very often it's children visiting their mother or father in rehab and that is a new phenomenon.
