Codependency is a set of maladaptive and compulsive behaviors learned during childhood; developed to cope with great emotional pain and stress.
In relation to alcoholics, codependency creates a destructive environment that allows alcoholics and addicts to maintain self-destructive behaviors. In fact, very few alcoholics and drug addicts can maintain their addictions without someone or some people bailing them out on a regular basis.
What types of behaviors are considered codependent?

- Paying rent for someone else
- Minimizing inappropriate behavior
- Enabling (Giving addicts and alcoholics money)
- Bailing alcoholics and addicts out of jail
- Not setting appropriate boundaries
